The Digital Marketing Funnel, Explained for Nigerian Businesses
"Post a promo, wait for sales" is not a marketing strategy — it's one stage of one, aimed at people who were never going to buy in the first place. The funnel explains why.
The three stages
Most Nigerian small business marketing lives almost entirely in Conversion — "Buy now," "DM to order," "Limited stock." That works on the small slice of people who already trust the brand. It does nothing for the much larger group who've never heard of it.
Why skipping Awareness and Consideration costs more, not less
Selling only to people who already know you means every new customer has to discover you some other way — usually word of mouth, which is slow and impossible to control. Meanwhile, ad spend goes almost entirely toward people unlikely to convert on a cold pitch, which is why "we ran ads and got no sales" is such a common complaint. The ads weren't wrong; they were aimed at the wrong stage.
What each stage actually looks like in practice
Awareness content doesn't mention buying at all. It's useful or entertaining on its own — a tip, a myth-bust, a relatable moment — and its only job is to make a stranger stop scrolling and remember your name.
Consideration content answers the questions a genuinely interested person would have: how it works, what makes you different, proof it's worked for others (reviews, before/afters, case studies).
Conversion content is where the direct offer finally belongs — the discount, the "book now," the checkout link — aimed at people who've already been through the first two stages, whether that took one day or three months.
Awareness: "3 ingredients that make eczema worse" (no product mentioned)
Consideration: "Before/after: how Amaka cleared her eczema in 6 weeks" (product mentioned, not pushed)
Conversion: "20% off this week only — link in bio"
The takeaway
If almost all of your content looks like the Conversion example, you're not doing digital marketing wrong — you're only doing a third of it. The businesses that grow fastest online are usually the ones consistently feeding all three stages, not the ones with the flashiest discount graphic.
